What Is Monolithic Zirconia?

Zirconia is a highly durable, metal-free ceramic material used for crowns and bridges. Monolithic zirconia means the restoration is produced from a single block; multi-layered blocks help create a colour transition close to that of a natural tooth.

At our clinic, an intraoral digital scan is taken, the restoration is designed on the computer and produced by CNC milling in our in-house CAD/CAM system. This removes the need for conventional impression material and aims for a precise, millimetre-level fit.

Who Is It Suitable For?

Zirconia crowns and bridges may be considered in the following situations:

  • People with teeth weakened by decay, fracture or large fillings
  • People with root-canal-treated teeth that need to be protected with a crown
  • People who want to replace a missing tooth with a bridge
  • People who prefer a metal-free, biocompatible restoration

The suitable material and restoration type (zirconia, IPS e.max, etc.) is decided by the dentist after examination, based on the position of the tooth, the chewing load and your aesthetic expectations.

The Treatment Process Step by Step

Step 1

Examination and Planning

Teeth, gums and bite are assessed and, if needed, a treatment plan is prepared with X-rays or 3D imaging.

Step 2

Tooth Preparation and Digital Scan

The tooth is prepared to suit the restoration and a precise impression is taken with an intraoral digital scan.

Step 3

Design and CAD/CAM Fabrication

The restoration is designed on the computer and milled from a zirconia block in the in-house CAD/CAM system.

Step 4

Try-in and Placement

Fit, bite and shade are checked; the restoration is bonded to the tooth and care recommendations are shared.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, zirconia or IPS e.max?

Zirconia is often chosen for its high chewing strength, especially for back teeth, while IPS e.max is often chosen for its high translucency, especially for front teeth where aesthetics come first. Your dentist decides which is suitable based on the tooth's position and your expectations.

Does a zirconia crown contain metal?

No. Zirconia is a metal-free ceramic material and is preferred for its biocompatibility. Please tell your dentist about special circumstances such as a metal allergy during your examination.

How long does it take to prepare a zirconia crown?

The time varies depending on the case and the number of restorations. In-house CAD/CAM production makes planning easier; the exact timeline is given after examination.
